A Tibetan Painted Panel Door. Canvas over wood painted using mineral pigments and polychrome. Tibet has little resources and old wood is reused as platforms for Buddhist art. This representation of the process of life creation showing a Mahakala face contained within the outline of a lotus flower bulb. Buddhist Mahakala is the God of Time, Maya, Creation, Destruction and Power. The Lotus bulb represents proliferation of life. Moon above the sun rests atop the third eye of mystical intuition and insight—an inner vision and enlightenment beyond what the physical eyes can see. Below the mouth is a beard of fire representing life symbolizing the power of creation to destruction, a protector. The bottom of the painting represents the beginning of life as nature. The Sun and moon in this context is symbolic of wisdom and compassion, the emblem of balance and harmony. The process of life contained within the Lotus bulb bloom the seeds of life. In all this painting is presenting the image of powerful protection in life and after life being able to see over all things as we are born from the earth to move through life beyond atmosphere back to energy into a next life. Which is the top of the painting from the tree tops to the clouds, to the rainbow of colors flowing upward. The rainbow body which is considered the "penultimate transitional state of meditation in which matter begins to be transformed into pure light." This is the highest state attainable in the realm of samsara. A wonderful unique Tibetan art piece. In good condition, as pictured, weathered from time and use. Has a wire on back for wall hanging.
