A 19th century Chinese Altar Table, console table. Exquisite Black Lacquer Chinese Altar Table. Details carved spandrels of auspicious billowing clouds rest beneath a solid one piece top with everted flanges opening to the heavens. Carved Penny flowers motif with crescent moon incorporated into struts add fine details to the legs, having its original black lacquer covering showcasing this tables master craftsmanship and importance. In Chinese the Symbols carved into the structure provide more then decoration, they have purpose and meaning. The carving to the spandrels represent clouds and atmosphere suggesting a high and heavenly status. The everted flanges pointing up in an open welcoming position. Chinese traditional art and customs are infused with symbols and habits that pertain to flowers, nature and the Moon. The lower struts between the legs reveal carvings of Peony flowers. The chrysanthemum (Peony) symbol of autumn, flower of the ninth moon, the King of flowers, is a symbol of royalty and virtue. Looking closely you can notice a crescent moon facing upward beneath the flowers, with also two objects flying up to the moon lower right and left symbolizing the promise of abundance, harmony, and good fortune. Understanding these symbols and how they relate to Chinese culture allows us to understand the significance of such a table. This Dynasty table was created for a very significant home and placement. Table has a wonderful patina in excellent condition commensurate with age and use.
