17th century Buddhist Lohan wood block carving. Large-scale carving of Chinese Lohan. Remnants of pigments, cracks to wood, having wooden pegs in the construction. Condition is good based on age. Lohan are the eighteen original followers of the Buddha who have followed the eightfold path and attained the four stages of Enlightenment. They have reached the state of Nirvana and are free of worldly cravings. In contemplation of all things this representation is believed to be Tanshou Luohan. He was a prince but became a monk. After meditation he would raise his hands like Lifting the Sky. Carved by monks in the 17th century filled with blessings. Each blessing placed inside the carving using wooden pegs. Each peg hammered into this statue. This is rare folk art Buddhist statue.
